Foreword by John Kohler (Growing Your Greens)
This book is a valuable resource for anyone looking to create food security and independence, whether starting from scratch or refining an existing garden. The insights within will help you cultivate a thriving, diverse garden that sustains not just your body, but a deeper connection to the land. I hope it inspires you, as it has me, to plant with intention and grow a future of abundance.

After 25 years of gardening—across tropical and temperate regions, visiting farms, and cultivating my own land—I’ve come to appreciate the power of a resilient, diverse food system. What I love most about Mira Fruta: Tropical Survival Garden is its emphasis on a broad variety of plants, especially perennial vegetables. These hardy, nutrient-dense greens provide consistent harvests with minimal effort, making them an essential part of a truly sustainable garden.

One of the most compelling aspects of this book is how it makes the reader think. The thoughtful questions woven throughout encourage deep reflection—on food security, climate, resources, and personal goals. This kind of engagement is critical, because gardening isn’t just about growing food; it’s about making conscious choices that shape a more resilient and self-sufficient future. By taking the time to answer these questions, you’re not just following a guide—you’re designing a system that works uniquely for you.

In today’s world, growing your own food is more important than ever. Industrial agriculture prioritizes profit over nutrition, quality, and ripeness, producing food designed for transport and shelf life rather than flavor and sustenance. Supermarket produce is often harvested too early, treated to last longer, and stripped of the nutrients that come from truly fresh, naturally ripened food. A survival garden puts that power back in your hands—ensuring access to food that is rich, alive, and tailored to your needs, not corporate bottom lines.

Happy growing,
John Kohler

A Survival Garden Supports Anyone
A survival garden supports anyone, regardless of diet, income, or free time.
For everyone, it is great for basic staple food source and foundational nutrition.
For starting homesteaders, it provides a quick food supply in the challenging first period.
For plant-based gardeners, it can produce all their staple and even the majority of the variety of their food.
Those of us who prefer to eat a raw plant-based diet, can plant more salad vegetables and fruit trees, while the rest of the garden is still a safe backup.
The food crops can help you out in an unseen economic challenge or provide basic supply continuously.
Either way, it means high-quality, farm-fresh, beyond organic, rich, and delicious food.
Let’s plant more survival gardens for our families!

Re: Book: Tropical Survival Garden - Backyard Food Freedom
The "Tropical Survival Garden" guided me to practical approaches in establishing and adding and maintaining a sustainable food source, which has been incredibly beneficial for my personal fruit farm and greenhouse.

For me personally, it helped with:

🥗 Emphasis on Perennial Vegetables: The book perennial vegetables, which provide consistent harvests with minimal effort. This has been a game-changer for my greenhouse, ensuring a steady supply of nutrient-dense greens.

🍌 Aerobic Compost Piles: Utilizing kitchen scraps, green plant material, and dry leaves to create nutrient-rich soil. This method is effective and works quickly in my warm compost environment.

💩 Humanure: The guide's explanation of compost toilets has allowed me to integrate this sustainable waste management system, turning humanure into fertile soil for my fruit trees (especially my bananas) after proper composting.

🍄‍🟫 Liquid Fertilizers: I've started using compost tea and banana skin liquid, to boost plant growth. The inclusion of urine as a free, nutrient-rich fertilizer has been particularly useful for a quick boost to my fruit trees. You can tell the trees closest to the house are thriving!

🌧️ Rainwater Collection: The practical instructions on rainwater collection have me interested in setting up an efficient system for irrigating my garden and mixing liquid fertilizers directly into the water tank.

♻️ Design Principles for Resilience: The advice on designing a resilient system by planting densely and aiming for diversity has helped me create a robust ecosystem in my fruit farm. Incorporating both prime and backup food crops ensures food security.

🌻 Support Plants: The guide's section on support plants, especially aromatic plants and legume trees, has provided valuable insights for pest repellence, soil enrichment, and creating beneficial wildlife habitats within my farm.

Overall, the "Tropical Survival Garden" has provided useful guidance for enhancing the sustainability and productivity of my fruit farm and greenhouse, especially with the integration of humanure and various composting methods.
